Clauses of comparison (unreal)
CA94
The clauses of comparison that express the unreal are introduced with the conjunctions als ob or als and, more rarely, with als wenn or wie wenn.
They express a comparison which is not real.
Examples | |
comparison
Er sieht so müde aus,
als hätte er gar nicht geschlafen.
Die Straßen waren nass, | als ob es geregnet hätte. |
Sie verschwendet ihr Geld,
wie wenn sie keine finanziellen Probleme hätte.
main clause
subordinate clause
Note:
If the clause of comparison is introduced with als, the finite verb form is in the second position, directly after als.
Example | |
Er sieht so müde aus,
als hätte er gar nicht geschlafen.
In these clauses, the Konjunktiv II expresses something unreal. The comparison does not correspond to reality.
