The case indicates the syntactic role of the noun in the sentence. In German there are four cases, both in singular and in plural: the nominative, the genitive, the dative and the accusative.

The case of a noun is determined by the word it depends on, i.e verbs, adjectives and prepositions.

gedenken + genitive	Wir gedenken der Helden.

wert sein + accusative	Die Armbanduhr ist ihr Geld wert.
behilflich sein + dative	Der Kellner ist den Gästen immer behilflich.
froh sein + genitive	Ich bin meines Lebens froh.

prepositions	Examples
für + accusative	Dieser Brief ist für den Direktor.
von + dative	Der Kuchen ist von meiner Mutter.
wegen + genitive	Wegen des Wetters blieben wir zu Haus.
