Coordinating conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect main clauses, subordinate clauses that depend on the same main clause, and sentence arguments.

The following are coordinating conjunctions:

aber

allein

außer

beziehungsweise

denn

doch

jedoch

oder

sondern

sowie

und

1. Connecting main clauses

When main clauses are connected with a coordinating conjunction, their syntactic structure remains unchanged.

Examples
Er hat viel gelernt,	aber	er hat die Prüfung nicht bestanden.
Sie ist müde,	denn	sie hat hart gearbeitet.
Sein Bruder heißt Mark	und	seine Schwester heißt Lena.
Er kommt nicht aus Köln,	sondern	er kommt aus Düsseldorf.
Wir bleiben zu Hause	oder	wir machen einen Ausflug.

2. Connecting subordinate clauses

Coordinating conjunctions can only connect subordinate clauses that depend on the same main clause.

Examples
Er hat gesagt,	dass er gelernt hat,	aber	dass er die Prüfung nicht bestanden hat.

3. Connecting sentence arguments

All coordinating conjunctions, except "denn", can connect sentence arguments.

Example
Ich und meine Freunde machen gern Bungee Jumping.	subject + subject
Wir essen gern Fisch oder Gemüse.	object + object
Lisa fährt oft nach Griechenland bzw. nach Kreta.	adverbial phrase + adverbial phrase
