The Konjunktiv I
The Konjunktiv I is used in the indirect speech. The statement/utterance of a person is reported by another.

Mariana antwortete, sie habe keine Zeit. | |
Er hat belauptet, er sei gerstern nicht zu Hause gewesen. |
The statement/utterance of a person can also be quoted directly. In this case, in the written language, the statement/utterance is placed between quotation marks.

Mariana antwortete: "Ich habe keine Zeit". | |
Er hat belauptet: "Ich bin gerstern nicht zu Hause gewesen". |
The Konjunktiv I is seldom used in main clauses and mostly for giving instructions in

cooking recipes or instruction manuals | Man öffne das Programm mit Adminrechten. |
Man erhitze vorsichtig und rühre häufig die Milch. |
However, this way of giving instructions and expressing a request is quite obsolete.
