The modal verb müssen
The main meaning of the modal verb müssen is that of necessity.
This necessity can derive from various reasons, i.e. social norms, an inner or external obligation or commitment, an order or command, a law of nature.
Examples |
Sie musste heiraten, sie war schwanger. |
Ich muss hart arbeiten, um mein Ziel zu erreichen. |
Hunde müssen an der Leine geführt werden. |
Petra muss jeden Morgen um 8 Uhr im Büro sein. |
Alle Menschen müssen sterben. |
The modal verb müssen can also be used to express a request/command; in this case, it can substitute the modal verb sollen.

=
|
Du sollst sofort nach Hause gehen. |
It must be noted that a request expressed with müssen is more powerful than one expressed with sollen.
