Positive degree
EA12
An adjective in the positive degree simply denotes a property without making a comparison.
Examples | |
positive
|
Der Porsche ist teuer. |
Paul ist groß. | |
Sabine singt schön. |
On the other hand, the positive degree can also be used to denote that two or more entities or things share a property in the same degree, thus expressing equality between them. In this case, the positive degree is used in combination with the words so and wie.
Examples | |
positive
|
Der Porsche ist so teuer wie der Mercedes. |
Paul ist so groß wie Laura.
Sabine singt so schön wie ihre Schwester. |
The use of the positive degree in negation expresses inequality.
Examples | |
positive
|
Der Porsche ist nicht so teuer wie der Mercedes. |
Paul ist nicht so groß wie Laura.
Sabine singt nicht so schön wie ihre Schwester. |
Furthermore, besides the words so and wie, words like genauso - wie, gleich - wie doppelt so - wie, dreimal so - wie etc. can also be used.
Examples | |
genauso - wie
|
Der Porsche ist ganauso teuer wie der Mercedes. |
gleich - wie
|
Paul ist gleich so groß wie Laura. |
doppelt so - wie
|
Der Computer A kostet doppelt so viel wie der Computer B. |
dreimal so - wie
|
Die Strecke A ist dreimal so lang wie die Strecke B. |
In conclusion, it is possible to compare adjectives of the same degree.
Examples |
das Bett ist so hoch wie breit |
er ist so klug wie höflich |
