Sentential relative clauses

Sentential relative clauses do not refer to a specific part of the superordinate clause but to the content of the entire sentence. In this case, there is no reference word in the superordinate clause.

Example

Sein bester Freund hat zu seiner Geburtstagsfeier nicht kommen können, was ihn traurig machte.

The subordinate relative clauses of this type always follow the main clause and are introduced in the following ways:

introductory word	Examples
was	Der Minister ist zurückgetreten, was alle sehr überraschte.
pronominal adverb (wo+)	Peter hat den Zug verpasst, worüber er sich sehr geärgert hat.
weshalb / weswegen	Er war plötzlich krank geworden, weshalb er nicht kommen konnte.
