Contracted clauses
SA2
Contracted clauses are clauses that are connected in a coordinated manner. These clauses share at least one common and two different arguments. If this is not the case, we are not dealing with contracted clauses but with mere listing.
| Examples | |
| Er kauft Tomaten und sie Karotten. | Er kauft Tomaten und Karotten. |
| common argument : predicate | common argument : subject + predicate |
| different arguments : subject + object | different arguments : object |
| contracted clauses | listing |
Sentences that share common arguments like :
- common subject
| Example | |
| Er fand das Kind in der U-Bahn und brachte es nach Hause. |
- common predicate
| Er kaufte einen Pullover und sie eine Hose. |
- common subject and predicate (e.g auxiliary verb)
| Ich habe sie besucht und ihr Blumen gebracht. |
- common subject and predicate (e.g modal verb)
| Ich muss meine Tante nach Hause fahren und das Auto waschen. |
Note
In infinitive clauses, zu must always be used. It can never be omitted.
| Ich habe vor, nach Deutschland zu gehen und dort zu studieren. |
