The Konjunktiv II is used in declarative clauses like

| An deiner Stelle würde ich meinen Kindern nicht im Stich lassen. |
| Eine Goldkette hätte deiner Frau mehr gefallen. |
| Vor lauter Wut hätte er den Schiedrichter beinahe geschlagen. |
These are main clauses that express something unreal, imaginary, something that can only exist under certain conditions. Most times, however, they are elliptically formed conditional clauses of the unreal:
