Modal clauses are subordinate clauses that denote the type and nature of the action that is stated in the main clause. These clauses can be used to express various concepts like

Form and Function

Modal clauses are subordinate adverbial clauses that are are introduced by a conjunction and contain a finite or non-finite (infinitive) verb form.

je - desto / je - umso

stating a proportional relation

	Je schneller wir fahren, desto früher kommen wir an.
	Je größer das Angebot, umso niedriger der Preis.

Note: When the subordinate clause is introduced by the conjunction je, an adjective or an adverb in the comparative degree follow je or desto/umso.

als ob / als wenn / wie wenn / als

stating a hypothetical comparison with an unreal situation

	Examples
	Er sieht so müde aus, als ob er die ganze Nacht gearbeitet hätte.
	Sie verhielt sich so gelassen, als wüsste sie nichts vom Vorfall.

Note: They are comparative clauses of the unreal. The verb is in the Konjunktiv II. When the subordinate clause in introduced by als, the verb occupies the second position.
