Modal verbs
CA33
Modal verbs dürfen, können, mögen, müssen, sollen and wollen are mostly combined with the infinitive of a full verb. Only seldom are they used as full verbs.
Examples | |
modal verb + infinitive | Ich muss mich auf die Prüfung vorbereiten. |
Seine Eltern wollen aufs Land ziehen.
Darf man hier rauchen? | |
modal verb as a full verb | Ich muss schnell nach Hause. |
Seine Eltern wollen, dass er mit aufs Land zieht.
Kannst du Deutsch? |
Note
When modal verbs are combined with an infinitive, the present perfect and the past perfect tenses are not formed with the past participle (Partizip II) of the modal verbs but with the infinitive. See more at "Special ways of perfect tenses formation".
Examples |
Ich habe sofort nach Hause gehen müssen. |
