Use of the definite article

The definite article accompanies a noun that is, as indicated by the context, known.

A noun is indicated as known by the context when :

1.it is unique

Examples

die Alpen, der Atlantik, die Niederlande, die Erde, der Ferne Osten, der Peloponnes, die Luisenstraße, die Süddeutsche Zeitung usw.

2. it is clearly referred to

Examples

Das Frühstück wird um 8 Uhr serviert

Die Party findet morgen Abend statt.

Paul hat die Arbeit fertiggeschrieben.

3. it has been previously mentioned or is further clarified by an attribute. Furthermore, in the superlative it expresses uniqueness.

Plötzlich sah ich einen Wagen. Unter dem Wagen lag ein Mensch.
