Adverbials
XA7
The position of the adverbials is, to a large extent, free. However, there are some syntactic tendencies that determine the position of the adverbials both among each other and with regard to the objects.
The following rule applies in regard to the relation among adverbials:
free adverbials stand before adverbial complements |
Examples | ||
| fahren + adverb of place
Der Unterricht dauert heute ausnahmsweise bis 6 Uhr. |
dauern + adverb of time | |
| es geht D + adverb of manner |
The following tendency applies in regard to the relation among free adverbials, the so-called TeKaMoLo sequence.
time before cause before manner before place |
Examples | ||
| time before cause before place
Monika wartet seit Stunden / an der Haltestelle. |
time before place | |
Ich bin heute / allein / zu Hause. | time before manner before place
| time before manner
| manner before place |
In regard to temporal adverbials, imprecise adverbials stand before precise adverbials.
undefined time before defined time |
Examples | |
Paul fährt morgen / um 8 Uhr nach Köln.
Sie haben letztes Jahr / im Juni geheiratet. |
|
As far as conjunctional adverbials are concerned, they stand before other adverbials.
conjunctional adverbials stand before other adverbials |
Examples | |
In regard to the relation between adverbials and objects, the following weak tendency applies:
free adverbials follow a dative- and/or an accusative object |
Examples/em> | |
Paul hat seine Großeltern gestern besucht.
Monika hat das Päckchen per Kurier geschickt.
Ich habe dir das Buch gerne geliehen. |
This tendency becomes a rule when the objects are pronouns:
Examples | |
Paul hat sie gestern besucht.
Monika hat es per Kurier geschickt.
Ich habe es dir gerne geliehen. |
When the object is undetermined, this tendency does not apply.
Examples | |
Paul hat gestern einen alten Freund besucht.
Monika hat per Kurier ein Päckchen geschickt.
Ich habe dir gerne ein Buch geliehen. |
