Conditional clauses (unreal)
CA91
The Konjunktiv II forms are often used in conditional clauses of the unreal. These subordinate clauses, that are introduced with wenn (more seldom with falls), state a requirement, the condition under which the content of the main clause (on which the subordinate clause depends) is valid.

requirement
result

In these clauses, the Konjunktiv II expresses something unreal. The requirement stated does not correspond to reality.

CA91A
Conditional sentences of the unreal can be formed without the use of the conjunctions wenn or falls.
In this case, the verb occupies the first position and the subordinate conditional clause can only precede the main clause.
