Comparative degree

The comparative degree of an adjective denotes that an entity, compared to one or more others, has a property in a higher degree. In this case, comparison is expressed through the use of the word als right after the comparative adjective.

	Examples
comparative	Läufer A läuft schneller als Läufer B.
	Paul ist größer als Norbert.
	Die Deutschen sind pünktlicher als die Griechen.
	Die bessere Methode wird selten angewendet.

The word als is also used after the words anders and umgekehrt .

anders als	sie sieht ganz anders aus, als ich mir vorgestellt habe
umgekehrt als	es ist umgekehrt, als du es darstellst

Emphasis on comparison can be given through the word viel, as well as through the words erheblich, weit, noch, etwas, ein wenig.

intensified comparative	Läufer A läuft viel schneller als Läufer B.
intensified comparative	Schüler A hat etwas bessere Noten als Schüler B.

To express a quality of a lower degree, the words weniger or minder are used, combined with the positive type of the adjective.

lower degree	dieses Ortschaft ist weniger schön als jene
lower degree	der zweite Film war minder spannend

Adjectives can also be compared to one another through the use of words like mehr / eher...als, weniger...als.

ich war mehr tot als lebendig

eine eher irritierende als faszinierende Rede

sie handelte weniger leichtsinnig als unüberlegt

The lower grade comparative (mindernde Komparativ) expresses a degree lower than the one denoted by the positive degree of the adjective.

lower grade comparative	ein jüngerer Herr	ist nicht so jung wie ein junger Herr sondern älter
