Conditional clauses are subordinate clauses that express a condition, a requirement.

Form and Function

Conditional clauses are subordinate adverbial clauses that are introduced with or without a conjunction and contain a finite verb form.

	Examples
	Wenn es regnet, machen wir den Ausflug nicht.
	Ich werde mitmachen, wenn das Risiko eines Verlustes gering ist.

Note: the conjunction wenn introduces two different types of clauses, temporal or conditional. When words like immer or jedes Mal exist in the main clause, wenn is purely temporal and introduces a temporal clause. On the other hand, when the verb of the subordinate clause is in the Konjunktiv (i.e. wenn + Konjunktiv) or when the word so is in the main clause, wenn introduces a conditional clause. When the word dann is the Korrelat, the subordinate clause can be either temporal or conditional.

	Ich verfolge keine Sportereignisse, außer wenn es ums Boxen geht.

Note: Conditional clauses without an introductory conjunction always precede the main clause and their verb is in the first position.

Note: The modal verb sollen enhances the requirement stated in the conditional clause and expresses an additional possibility. The modal verb is always in the Präteritum tense of the Konjunktiv II. The conditional clause may or may not be introduced by a conjunction.
