Dative

The dative is the case that answers the question "to whom" (for a person) or "to what" (for things).

A noun in the dative case can have the following functions :

object/prepositional object to the verb	Examples
	Der Lehrer hilft den Kindern.
	Ich erkenne dich an der Stimme.

object/prepositional object to the adjective	Examples
	Der Künstler blieb seinem Stil treu.
	Wir sind mit dieser Entscheidung einverstanden.

* Dative of possession (der Kopf des Lehrers tut weh)

** Something happens to someone’s advantage or disadvantage

prepositional adverbial	Examples
	An diesem Sonntag sind die Geschäfte zu.
	Ich fahre oft zu meinen Eltern.

apposition	Examples
	Die Direktorin klopfte Dr. Huber, ihrem Stellvertreter, auf die Schulter.
